Words and Whimsy are two sock puppets that keep me inspired. They are ice breakers, conversation starters, and masters of make believe.
"Imagination is more important than knowledge" Albert Einstein
Whenever I go into classrooms I tell the children that an imagination is like a muscle: the more you use it, the bigger it will grow..
I am available for author visits to schools and libraries. Please contact me at email@example.com to discuss details.
My school presentations are tailored for grades P-6. They include reading and discussion in an informal, fun atmosphere. But the learning is real. Many of Language Arts outcomes for the Nova Scotia curriculum are covered: Active reading, critical thinking, social concepts, forming and asking appropriate questions, listening for answers and being respectful of others, as they ask. We talk about the Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How? of the story--and discuss how changing any one aspect of these questions could alter the story. We talk about the process of writing: prewriting, draft, revise, edit, rewriting, and polish.
The presentations run about an hour (a bit less for the younger grades) and everyone leaves inspired and excited.
I am an enthusiastic reader and a strong advocate of literacy and the fun of reading/writing. This energy is passed on to the children and quickly fills the room. I have seen even the most reluctant students turn to listen and sometimes, even ask a question.
I am available for classroom visits through the WITS program via the Writer's Federation of
Nova Scotia or independently. I am also available for "readings" and book signings. Just drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org
